On the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, the Yemeni Center for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Violations and Torture (Will and Hope) stands to renew its pledge to the victims and their families, emphasizing that torture remains a crime against humanity that is not subject to a statute of limitations, and that silence towards it is a form of complicity.
We, at the Yemeni Center, confirm that what detainees are subjected to in the prisons of the terrorist Houthi militia is not merely isolated individual violations or accidental incidents. Rather, it is a systematic and calculated policy in which the militia utilizes torture as an oppressive tool to break the will of free individuals and subjugate society.
These practices are carried out under top-level directives and are managed through an integrated network of prisons where the minimum standards of international humanitarian law are entirely absent. Our monitoring teams have documented the death of 456 detainees as a result of brutal and systematic torture inside the prisons and detention centers of the Houthi militia.
The lives of these victims were claimed under the weight of Houthi machinery of oppression and terrorism, through various forms of cruel physical and psychological torture, denial of medical care, and humiliating detention conditions.
On this occasion, which we live through constantly, we affirm that systematic torture holds the militia leaders and those who execute their orders individually and collectively criminally responsible for crimes against humanity.
We, at the Yemeni Center, reject any political settlements that bypass the blood of the victims, and we stress that justice is the sole pillar of peace. Furthermore, we call upon the United Nations and the Human Rights Council to open an independent international investigation into these systematic crimes committed by the Houthi militia, and to work seriously towards ending the state of “impunity.”
The Yemeni Center for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Violations and Torture will remain a loud voice for truth, continuing its work to advance the cause of the victims in the face of the machinery of oppression until everyone involved in torturing our people receives their just punishment.
