Explanatory Statement Regarding the Circulating Video of a Girl’s Suicide Incident in Hajjah Governorate
Activists are circulating a shocking video clip showing the moment a girl threw herself from the roof of her family’s house in Al Mahabishah district, Hajjah governorate.
According to documentation by the Yemeni Center for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Violations and Torture, “Will and Hope” (Erada and Amal), the details of the incident trace back to the girl (Amani) being forced into marriage with a supervisor affiliated with the Houthi militia, named Akram Ahmed Yahya Al-Mahbashi, under pressure from her father, a leader in the terrorist group, named Yahya Ali Al-Hadi.
After about a month of marriage, the girl left her husband’s home after he severely beat her. She returned to her family’s home, complaining of mistreatment, abuse, and her inability to continue living with him.
Despite her categorical refusal to return, her father continued his attempts to force her back, plunging her into a severe psychological state. Fearing the wrath of her unjust father, she fled to the roof of the house while he chased her.
What kind of father is this, and what kind of hearts do the leaders of the Houthi militia possess?
Her screams were to no avail, and she found no listening ears from her father.
Instead, the pressure to force her to return continued, in a scene that reflects the magnitude of oppression that women experience under the militia’s authority. This violent psychological pressure ultimately drove her to end her own life, escaping a reality imposed by force.
This incident is not isolated; rather, it is part of a long series of violations committed by the Houthi militia, ranging from the suppression of freedoms and coercion to blatant human rights violations, all amidst a complete absence of any legal or humanitarian protection.
