The Yemeni Center for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Violations and Torture (Will and Hope) Condemns the Brutal Killing of a Young Man Under Torture
The Yemeni Center for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Violations and Torture (Will and Hope) condemns in the strongest terms the horrific crime of killing the young man, Muadh Hamid Nasser Tafian, under brutal torture. This acts as a clear continuation of the series of grave and systematic violations of human rights and human dignity within the prisons of the Houthi militias.
Incident Details
-
Victim’s Name: Muadh Hamid Nasser Tafian.
-
Region: From Sharas District, Hajjah Governorate.
-
Date of Arrest: Arbitrarily arrested and forcibly disappeared since September 27, 2021.
-
Date and Place of Death: Passed away under the weight of torture in the Houthi militias’ Security and Intelligence detention center in the capital, Sana’a, on June 7, 2026.
We, at the Yemeni Center, affirm that the physical liquidation of detainees and forcibly disappeared persons through torture represents a flagrant violation of all international laws, covenants, and norms—foremost among them the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. The continuation of the policy of impunity is what encourages the commission of more of these horrific crimes and the cold-blooded liquidation of detainees.
In the face of this renewed humanitarian tragedy, the Yemeni Center for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Violations and Torture (Will and Hope) demands the following:
-
Intervention of the UN Rapporteur: We submit this urgent file to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture, calling for immediate intervention to condemn this crime and exert pressure to halt systematic violations in detention centers run by the Houthi Security and Intelligence.
-
Independent International Investigation: We call upon the international community and the Human Rights Council to form independent international investigation committees to uncover the circumstances surrounding the killing of detainee “Muadh Tafian” and all victims of torture, ensuring that perpetrators are exposed, brought before international justice, and prevented from escaping punishment.
-
Accountability and Protection: We hold the de facto authorities (the Houthi group) fully criminally and morally responsible for this crime and for the lives and safety of all detainees and forcibly disappeared persons in their prisons, demanding their immediate and unconditional release to prevent similar fates.
-
Broad Solidarity: We also call on all human rights organizations and activists to demonstrate wide solidarity with the victim’s family, intensify efforts to expose these practices, and provide support, protection, and rehabilitation for survivors and victims’ families. #Lest_We_Forget_Torture_Victims
We at the Center will spare no effort in documenting these crimes and relentlessly pursuing justice to bring redress to the victims.
