Mohammed Al-Haddar: A Victim of Torture to Death in Houthi Militia Prisons

The Yemeni Center for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Violations and Torture (Will and Hope) condemns in the strongest terms the heinous crime committed by the terrorist Houthi militia, which claimed the life of the young man “Mohammed Ahmed Al-Haddar” (a resident of the ‘Azzah area in Al-Bayda District, Al-Bayda Governorate) inside the Central Prison in Al-Bayda Governorate. This occurred after he was subjected to various forms of systematic and brutal torture for over a month since the date of his abduction.

The initial examination of the victim’s body, along with documented photos and reports, reveals the horror of the atrocities and the sadism of the perpetrators. The body of the martyr Al-Haddar appeared covered in horrific signs of torture, including a broken nose and multiple fractured ribs, which conclusively proves that the militia deliberately liquidated him physically outside the framework of the law by using the most horrific methods of systematic torture.

According to field information and sources documented by our organization, the Houthi leader named “Matloub Abdo Aidaroos Al-Sayyid,” accompanied by other Houthi elements from Saada Governorate, directly participated in and supervised this heinous crime.

The involvement of specific leaders and elements in committing these grave violations confirms beyond any doubt that torture to death is a systematic and established policy of the Houthi militia, not isolated incidents. It is an extension of a dark and bloody record committed by the militia against abductees and detainees in its secret and public prisons.

Houthi militia prisons regularly witness cruel practices that violate the most basic human laws and norms. These include systematic torture, enforced disappearance, and the denial of medical care, which have claimed the lives of dozens of detainees under the weight of torture or as a result of the deterioration of their health conditions due to inhumane detention conditions.

The Yemeni Center, which has taken upon itself the task of monitoring and documenting grave violations and prosecuting their perpetrators to ensure no impunity, affirms that this crime amounts to a war crime and a crime against humanity. It comes amidst a disturbing and terrifying escalation of deaths under torture inside Houthi militia detention centers.

Accordingly, the Yemeni Center (Will and Hope) holds the Houthi militia fully criminally and legally responsible for the murder of the young man Mohammed Ahmed Al-Haddar, and for all ongoing crimes and violations against thousands of abductees and forcibly disappeared persons in its prisons.

The Yemeni Center also demands immediate action to prosecute the perpetrators of this bloody crime, led by the so-called Matloub Abdo and all those who participated and were involved in torturing the victim to death, and to add their files to the list of criminals and investigators wanted by local and international justice.

Furthermore, the Yemeni Center calls on the international community, the UN Envoy to Yemen, and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to break their silence, condemn these ongoing violations, and exert serious pressure on the militia to stop the crimes of torture and enforced disappearance, and to open its prisons to independent international investigation committees.

The Center affirms that the blood of the martyr Mohammed Al-Haddar and all victims of torture will not be in vain, and that it will continue to accurately document these crimes to ensure the accountability of everyone involved in taking the lives of innocents and degrading their dignity, and to ensure that criminals do not escape punishment.
