The Yemeni Center for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Violations and Torture (Will and Hope) Condemns the Assassination of Educator Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Shaer
The Yemeni Center for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Violations and Torture (Will and Hope) condemns in the strongest terms the treacherous and heinous terrorist attack that targeted educator Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Shaer, Director of the private Al-Nawras Schools. Dr. Al-Shaer was assassinated by unidentified gunmen in the temporary capital of Aden on the morning of Saturday, April 23, 2026.
According to field reports, unidentified gunmen in a Kia vehicle lay in wait for Dr. Al-Shaer as he arrived at the Al-Nawras School branch in the Kabota area of the Al-Mansoura district. He was there to sponsor a student science competition in “Robotics and Artificial Intelligence.” As he was parking his car, the gunmen opened fire on him in cold blood, striking him with one bullet to the head and two to the chest. He succumbed to his injuries before arriving at Al-Salam Hospital, while the perpetrators fled the scene.
In documenting this crime, the Yemeni Center asserts that the assassination of Dr. Al-Shaer—a distinguished educational figure—is not merely a criminal homicide. Rather, it is a systematic targeting of the minds and professionals striving to build an educated generation amidst the harsh conditions of war, with the aim of plunging Aden into a vicious cycle of fear and ignorance.
Furthermore, targeting an educator on his way to encourage students in modern technology serves as a terroristic message directed at all educational institutions, designed to halt the progress of enlightenment.
The fact that this crime occurred in broad daylight in a vital area, as part of a series of systematic assassinations, reflects a security failure that demands urgent rectification. In this context, the Yemeni Center welcomes the Aden Security Department’s announcement regarding the arrest of four members of the assassination cell five days after the incident, while security sources confirmed that a fifth member fled to Cairo immediately after carrying out the attack.
The Yemeni Center for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Violations and Torture (Will and Hope) calls on the relevant authorities to swiftly apprehend the remaining fugitive, bring all those involved to justice, and keep the public regularly informed of the investigation’s progress. The Center also strongly urges the local authorities and the Aden Security Department to assume their full legal and moral responsibilities by tracking down the financiers and masterminds behind this cell and bringing them to a swift, public trial.
The Yemeni Center further calls upon the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and all international organizations to pressure the legitimate government to provide protection for educators and academics in Yemen, and to ensure there is no impunity for political and educational assassinations. The Center affirms that the blood of Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Shaer will remain a curse haunting his killers and those who harbor them, and it will not relent in following up on this case until complete justice is served.
