The Yemeni Center for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Violations and Torture “Erada & Amal” strongly condemns the brutal sniper crime that claimed the life of the child Ibrahim Jalal Amin in front of his school in Taiz.
Today, Sunday, April 5, 2026, a sniper belonging to the terrorist Houthi militia targeted Ibrahim with a direct shot to the heart in the Al-Safaa neighborhood of the Kalaba area. The child died instantly in a horrific crime that reflects a complete disregard for civilian lives and clearly demonstrates the deliberate targeting of children, even within school vicinities. This constitutes a flagrant violation of International Humanitarian Law and the rules governing the protection of children during armed conflicts.
The targeting of Ibrahim Jalal Amin while he was returning from school with his sister is a full-fledged crime. It confirms that the militia’s snipers are intentionally turning residential neighborhoods and school surroundings into open killing fields. This systematic criminal behavior aims to spread terror among the civilian population—particularly women and children—in the city of Taiz, which has endured years of continuous siege and targeting, marking an unprecedented moral and humanitarian decline.
The Center emphasizes that this heinous crime is an extension of a long series of sniping operations targeting civilians in Taiz. Local sources reported the injury of a woman in a separate sniping incident west of the city, and the injury of Shifa Hatem by a sniper’s bullet in the Jabal Habashi district, just days after her sister was wounded in the same area. This indicates a clear and recurring pattern of targeting civilians, the majority of whom are women and children.
Furthermore, the sniping of the child occurred right next to his sister as they exited a private school near the front lines in Tabbat al-Harir, Kalaba. This raises grave concerns regarding the safety of students and necessitates urgent action to evacuate schools located in danger zones and secure the educational process to preserve the lives of children who face the daily risk of death while pursuing their education.
The Yemeni Center notes that the young girl who witnessed her brother’s killing before her eyes has suffered severe psychological trauma and requires urgent, specialized psychological support. The profound psychological scars left by such crimes on children cannot be ignored, as they cause long-term suffering that threatens their mental well-being and future.
The Yemeni Center for the Rehabilitation of Victims of Violations and Torture “Erada & Amal” holds the terrorist Houthi militia fully responsible for this crime and the similar crimes that preceded it. The Center asserts that targeting children and students is a war crime that demands international criminal accountability and ensures that there is no impunity for the perpetrators.
The Center calls upon the United Nations, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Security Council, the UN Envoy to Yemen, and all international and regional organizations concerned with child protection to fulfill their legal and humanitarian responsibilities. It urges them to take immediate action to stop sniping crimes against civilians in Taiz, pressure for the protection of children and school environments, and dispatch independent international investigative committees to document these violations and bring those responsible to international justice.
The Center also calls on the legitimate Yemeni government to fulfill its national and constitutional duties by acting urgently to protect civilians in Taiz and accelerating efforts to liberate areas occupied by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia. This is essential to ending the suffering of the population and stopping the systematic sniping and targeting of children and women.
Finally, the Yemeni Center “Erada & Amal” calls on human rights organizations, activists, and the media to take serious and effective action to condemn this crime, document ongoing violations, and expose the practice of targeting children. It urges the pursuit of militia leaders and their supporting networks to dry up the resources that enable them to continue committing crimes against innocent civilians.
The blood of the child Ibrahim Jalal Amin stands as a new witness to the danger of continued international silence regarding the targeting of children in Taiz. The absence of accountability encourages the repetition of these violations and leaves the lives of civilians—especially children—vulnerable to daily death without protection.
